Summary Maria and Tony have an odd arrangement
Author's Note A birthday piece for [ profile] oddwildflowers.
Thanks My beta [personal profile] autolobotomysuicide and Odd herself for being amazing.

Maria woke up in a tangle of limbs and bed sheets. She took in a deep breath, waking up her lungs. She stretched as best she could with the man clinging to her like a child would a stuffed toy. She wrinkled her nose some, trying to pull him off so she could move. He groaned in protest, holding tighter.

"Tony," Maria growled. "I can't breath."

Tony snorted a little as he came out of his sleep. Maria took the opportunity to slip out from his reach. He rolled onto his back, groaning as he stretched some, hand on his face. Maria crawled out of bed, adjusting her tank top that had ridden up some during the night. She stretched as well, rolling her shoulders, cracking her back.

"When I agreed to this," Maria said as she rolled her neck, "I didn't think I'd be the man in the relationship."

This earned a tired laugh from the man in the bed, "Hold on, we agreed to this? I don't remember signing the contract."

Maria supposed they weren't exactly in a relationship, no, at least not a sexual one. But they were defiantly in some sort of relationship -- one where he could come to her at all hours and have some mini breakdown in her lap and she would do her best to comfort him despite how awkward it was for her. She'd wondered why her, why not someone else? But she realized Stark had about as many friends these days as she did.

Tony sat up in bed finally, sleepy-eyed and hair sticking up in places. He gave her a lazy smile.

"What?" she looked at him, eyebrow raised.

Tony shook his head, "Nothing. Just...looking."

Maria gave him a glare, "No."

"What? I didn't say anything."

"You were thinking it."

Tony paused a moment, as if to consider it, "Yeah. Yeah I was."

Maria rolled her eyes. "No," she repeated.

Tony put up his hands, though she could feel him watching her when she walked towards the bathroom. When she came out, he was dressed in what he had worn the day before, looking thoroughly disheveled.

"Ready for breakfast?" he grinned.

Maria put her hands on her hips, "I am not going to the mess hall with you looking like that."

"What? Why not?" Tony looked offended, though it was obviously faked. "You're not ashamed of me are you?"

"I will not have the entire agency think I'm sleeping with the director."

"Well...if you want to get technical about it, you are."

"Get out."

Tony waved a hand, heading towards the door, "I'll see you in a few then, Sub-Director Hill."

He gave a short nod then opened the door and left. Maria thought she saw something sad in his eyes, but didn't dwell on it. She already knew the man had problems, certainly the past few nights had shown that, but she wasn't the one who could fix them. She just had to keep telling herself that.
